Training Tips

Improve Your Plank Score

Squeeze everything, glutes, quads, core, and even your fists if using a fist plank. Full-body tension is what separates a 2-minute hold from a 4-minute hold.

Focus on a fixed point on the ground 12–18 inches in front of you and control your breathing. Slow, rhythmic nasal breathing reduces perceived effort significantly during long holds.

Train progressive overload: start at your max hold time, rest 2 minutes, and add 15 seconds each week. Three weekly plank sessions with deliberate progression adds minutes within a few months.

Fix anterior pelvic tilt before test day. If your lower back arches, your hips drop and you fail sooner, and risk a no-count. Practice hollow-body holds to reinforce neutral spine.

On test day, squeeze harder in the last 30 seconds rather than giving up. Most soldiers quit at the "wall", a burst of extra effort past the wall is worth 5–10 additional points.

FAQ

Plank Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum plank time to pass the ACFT?+
2:54 (2 minutes and 54 seconds, or 174 seconds) earns exactly 60 points. Times below 2:54 result in a failing score. Scoring 100 points requires holding 4:00 or longer.
What is the correct plank position for the ACFT?+
You must rest on your forearms with elbows directly under your shoulders, and on your toes. Your body must form a straight line from head to heels. Hips must not sag below or rise above this line.
Can I rest during the PLK?+
No. Once you break the position (hips drop, knees touch the ground, or you collapse), the event is over and the time is recorded. There are no rest breaks during the plank event.
Did the plank replace sit-ups or the leg tuck?+
Both. The original ACFT included a leg tuck as the core event. In 2022, the Army replaced the leg tuck with the plank to provide a more accessible and measurable assessment of core endurance.
Is the plank scored the same for men and women?+
Yes. The ACFT uses gender-neutral scoring. All soldiers are held to the same standards regardless of gender or age group.
